SHHHHHH...it's a secret....

Since we've been talking about food safety of late, here's another interesting element to add to the discussion - the "anti-restaurant"!

Apparently, anti-restaurants are the latest food trend in Toronto and include underground supper clubs which spring up in secret locations in the city. The Toronto Star has been following the anti-restaurant "Charlie's Burgers" which contrary to what its name suggests is actually creating fine dining fare.

According to reports in the Toronto Star, Toronto Public Health doesn't seem to happy about these secret food clubs either!

If you're interested the blog below says you can add yourself to an email list on the Charlie's Burgers website to MAYBE be "invited". If I make the cut, I'll let you all know. Or, maybe not!

Vegetarianism and Food Choice

Just to follow up on the vegetarian thread...I'm a vegetarian too!

Technically, I'm a vegetarian for all the usual reasons that people subscribe to vegetarianism (ethical, environmental, health etc...).

But usually when people ask why I'm a vegetarian I just say because I have the choice to be one. This isn't a choice that I take lightly and I know that I am in a position of privilege to have this choice. For the most part I often have tons of options when I make food decisions. That's why I like to remind myself about my vegetarianism in this way. It's humbling and it reminds me of how important choice and power are when it comes to food decisions and what we food we are able to access.

Is America suffering from a "national eating disorder"? Food author Michael Pollan thinks America is unhealthily obsessed with healthy eating and recently offered up 7 Rules for Eating.

What do you think about his "7 Rules"?

WWOOF!

At the Stomach This! workshop this past weekend, one participant shared that this summer she would be "woofing" in Costa Rica. "Say what?", I thought in my head (and eventually out loud.)

It turns our that WWOOF stands for Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms and it involves vacationing and volunteering on Organic Farms. Read more here:

Stomach This! Update

Happy Tuesday!!

So the Stomach This! workshop has come and gone and 20 young people from around Ontario are now equipped to run their very own food security workshops. All in all it was great day with alot of positive energy involved!

I for one learned ALOT from the youth participants at the session and I realized how little I actually know about agriculture. Contrary to several of the very bright and enthusiastic participants at Stomach This!, I've never actually planted anything, I didn't really know what CSA means (although Jess blogs about it here: http://jessfood4health.tigblog.org/post/616067), and I definitely didn't know what wwoofing was.

Since all participants walked away with commitments to improving food security in their own lives and communities I feel inspired to do the same. I will try to plant something that I can eat this summer, I will re-read Jess' blog on CSA and I will learn and share the definition of wwoofing in my next blog!
